This comes from an article by [info]rachelmanija entitled, Say Yes to Gay YA.
(click the link for the full article)

Our novel Stranger has five viewpoint characters; one, Yuki Nakamura, is
gay and has a boyfriend. Yuki's romance, like the heterosexual ones in
the novel, involves nothing more explicit than kissing.

An agent from a major agency, one which represents a bestselling YA novel in the same genre as ours, called us.

The agent offered to sign us on the condition that we make the gay
character straight, or else remove his viewpoint and all references to
his sexual orientation.

This isn't about that specific agent; we'd gotten other rewrite requests before this one. Previous agents had also offered to take a second look if we did rewrites… including cutting the viewpoint of Yuki, the gay character.

It's time to stand up and demand change. Spread the word everywhere if you are just as angry and outraged by this.

That is just ... shocking. Wow. o.O

Why in the world would a writer ever change their character like that?

I would have to whole heartedly agree. I hope you help spread the news.

Just out of curiosity, how did you come upon my journal?

PS: I realize the way I asked that question may have come across as rude depending on where you put the emphasis. It is not intended to be at all!

Is there somewhere to actually sign a petition against ... someone?

I don't believe there is a petition going since it's not specifically, from my understand, one agent. It was said that there are more than one agents that have done this. I'm sure if you go to the original poster, link is here, they might be able to tell you more in regards to whether a petition, aside from spreading the word as I've done. I hope you spread it as well!

Just out of curiosity, how did you come upon my journal? I like to know how it's spreading I guess. :D

A post appeared on my flist - at a remove or two from you I think, and I re-posted.

Awesome! I'm glad others are seeing it! :D

I've seen this everywhere, and followed the last link back to your Lj. So you don't know me, but hi!

Frankly, I'm not sure what just reblogging this will accomplish, so I'd like to ask if you or anyone else know of someone specific in publishing we might contact.

Otherwise it's kind of like preaching to the choir.

It's not my story. I copied it from the original source. If you click the link, you can go to their journal. They have some things that people can do there.

Thank you for your support!

To continue to support YA fiction with LGBTQ characters, I have proposed creating Permanent Floating YA Diversity Book Clubs. If you wish to participate, the link will explain how to begin one, join one, or simply pass on the word.

This is ridiculous. I can't with people like this.
